We at Heal Wellness are committed to functional medicine. We have positioned ourselves as a not only a solution provider for various functional medicine needs, but also as a knowledge base for doctors and others who are interested in enhancing their practice through functional medicine. We address the underlying cause of the disease and use a systems approach for prolonged wellness of the patient.
Heal Wellness is an active member of the IFM (Institute of Functional Medicine), which is the pioneer of the methodology that is transforming healthcare around the globe. Our Healthcare Practitioners are trained by the IFM.
Our labs and testing partners are pioneers in the field through whom we provide state of the art testing solutions for our patients. We are authorized distributors of Genova Diagnostics test kits and BabyGenes new born screening test kits.
Health is an unpretentious state for most of us only made complex by disease. We are often dismissive about health till declining function interferes with our quality of life. When the symptoms can no longer be ignored we think of quick remedies. A clinical diagnosis is what can stop us on our tracks. Diseases worry us considerably .We try and run out of options to restore health. Chronic illnesses can be debilitating!
Functional Medicine offers hope to people who suffer from chronic health issues or diseases that do not seem to respond to prescribed treatments. Functional Medicine deals with restoring your health and bodily functions. To understand Functional Medicine we need to understand how our body functions. Also as to how unique we are.
We are fully interconnected complex functioning organisms where we constantly exchange air, fluids and energy with our environment. Our surroundings impact us in every way and we react to it.
In the time it takes you to read this sentence, your amazing body will have analyzed, synthesized, restructured, and utilized thousands of nutrient molecules. It will have split proteins, burned sugars, pumped minerals, exchanged gases, and transferred electrons. The food we eat is information provided to our bodies to function. Thousands of chemical reactions occur each second in our body, every second of our life. Each chemical reaction occurs in a step-wise sequence and depends on the regular availability of raw materials. The nutrients we consume each day are our body’s source of raw materials. Appropriate nutrient intake sustains functionality and ensures optimal health.
No two people are alike. In addition to our unique outward appearance, the way our body functions inside is very much dependent on our individual genetic and environmental influences.
But Diseases Strike!!
Whatever you consume sets up a series of changes in you that determine what happens next. A shortage of any nutrient can shut down the “assembly lines” that are our body’s biochemical pathways. However, our body is amazingly adaptive and can sometimes function for long periods of time even though particular biochemical “assembly lines” are closed down. There is impaired cellular function. Damages at cellular levels are mostly asymptomatic. This subsequently leads to functional decline, which may manifest as early stage disease. Chronic disease is almost preceded by a lengthy period of declining function Eventually, certain nagging symptoms can result in organ failure or full-fledged disease _ that can destroy the quality of life. Diseases are as complex as the human physiology.
Individuals have their own pathways toward a disease — One person’s asthma, diabetes, or heart disease is not the same as another’s. Similarly outcomes are not predictable. What works for one person may not be necessarily effective with another. So each one has their individual pathway to healing as well.
How does Functional Medicine work?
Functional Medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex, chronic disease. Functional Medicine analyzes how a patient’s lifestyle, genetic make-up and environment influence his/her physiological state. The mechanism of the disease’s origin in a patient is understood ; the patient is provided with the constituents needed to restore basic physiological functions.
Functional medicine believes that the fundamental physiological processes ultimately determine a person’s health or disease and has categorized them as the seven organizing systems.
- Assimilation (e.g., digestion, absorption, microbiota/GI, respiration)
- Defense and repair (e.g., immune, inflammation, infection/microbiota)
- Energy (e.g., energy regulation, mitochondrial function)
- Biotransformation and elimination (e.g., toxicity, detoxification)
- Transport (e.g., cardiovascular, lymphatic system)
- Communication (e. g., endocrine, immune messengers , neurotransmitters,)
- Structural integrity (e.g., from subcellular membranes to musculoskeletal structure.
Imbalances arise in the physiological functions due to the malfunction/shutting down of the “assembly lines” that are our body’s biochemical pathways. These imbalances are identified and the body is provided with the needed constituents to restore the functionality of that system. When the functions are restored the symptoms that manifested disappear. The goal is to maximize the whole body function at all levels. Functional Medicine is concerned with restoring health to the patient, rather than treat the disease.
